Making the Most of Your Parent-Teacher Conference
Parent-Teacher Conferences are one of the most valuable touchpoints of the school year, and at Wayland Montessori, we take them seriously.
This year, conferences take place on May 15, with school closed for the day so that our teachers can give each family their full attention.
What these conferences are for. Our conferences are not evaluations. They are conversations. The goal is to bring together everything the teacher has observed about your child over the course of the year and invite you to share what you have been seeing at home. Together, you build the most complete picture possible of your child's development.
Expect to hear about your child's academic progress: where they are in the Montessori curriculum, what areas have come naturally, and where they have been stretching themselves. But also expect to hear about the more holistic dimensions: how your child interacts with peers, how they handle transitions, what they gravitate toward, and how their independence and confidence have grown.
How to prepare as a parent. The most valuable thing you can bring to this conference is your own observations and questions. Think about what you have noticed at home this year. What does your child talk about from school? Where have you seen growth? What has surprised you? What are you still wondering about?
If your child is preparing to move on to a new school in the fall, this is a great opportunity to ask about kindergarten readiness: the specific skills your child has developed, and the areas where continued practice through the summer would be most beneficial. Our teachers are well-equipped to provide this guidance and can help you identify simple, concrete ways to support your child's continued growth over the coming months.
For families continuing with us next fall. If your child will be returning to Wayland Montessori in September, this conference is an opportunity to set intentions for the year ahead. What does your child want to explore next? What goals can the teacher and family align on together? This kind of collaborative goal-setting deepens the partnership between home and school that makes our Montessori approach so effective.
Our teachers will often share suggestions for maintaining the rhythms and skills developed during the school year: gentle ideas for keeping curiosity alive, independence strong, and transitions smooth. Listen for them and jot them down.
We look forward to seeing every family on May 15.
